English Country Style

Getting the Country House look

English Country Furniture

We have had a wealth of PBS and BBC television shows bring us face to face with Regency England, or rural England in the 1800's.  Looking closely at the layers of possessions and textures in the backgrounds helps capture the Essential element of English Country Furniture.  It is the mixture of old, worn, highly valuable, or not valuable but highly functional.  It is a mixture that always looks as though it was put together over generations.  And it always looks as though there were good times in a families history and lean times.

America, even in our great houses, never accomplished the sense that a single family of great importance lived in (and still lives on in) a home.  Farmhouses or smaller homes are the same way, there is never that sense of continuity.

Fabrics, layers and Brickabrack

The English Country House look is best achieved by layers of textures and furniture from different periods.  I love richly textured fabrics matched with small prints.
